Mesothelioma is cancer of mesothelial cells which forms a thin lining called mesothelium membrane around the chest organs. One of the most well known types of Mesothelioma cancer is Pleural Mesothelioma. Even the study done on Mesothelioma cancer is basically done more on pleural mesothelioma. The treatment guidelines and diagnosis guidelines are also more for pleural mesothelioma. The pleural mesothelioma treatment is done by Debulking Pleurectomy surgery. This surgical procedure is still considered as a cure to the mesothelioma cancer but it is basically meant for reducing the symptoms associated with this disease.
The Debulking Pleurectomy is meant for decreasing the amount of cancerous tissues in the chest. It does not aim at the complete removal of the cancerous cells from the body. It can be used with the other procedures to control the pleural cavity around the lungs and chest. Only at the time of the surgery the surgeon can decide on the extent to which he is going to remove the parietal pleura and the other cancerous cells, keeping in mind the success and complication related to the surgery. The Debulking Pleurectomy in modern days is done by video assisted thoracoscopic surgery, commonly known as VATS procedure.
VATS procedure is considered to be having higher success rates and it offers better life conditions for the mesothelioma patients. VATS procedure also has fewer complications after the surgery. VATS is an advanced technique in thoracic surgeries. It allows the least surgical invasion in human body and involves video camera using which the surgeon can easily see the pleural cavity inside the body very clearly. There are minimum two incisions made in the patient chest to introduce the instruments. The surgeon can look the through the video camera and perform the surgery through the small incisions made. There is one more procedure for Debulking Pleurectomy called thoracotomy which was used before but now avoided by the doctors. The thoracotomy procedure was dropped because of the postsurgical complications.
