Due to the difficulties associated with treating the disease, mesothelioma therapy tends to focus on palliative care. For many cases, this is partly because the illness is not diagnosed until the cancer has reached an advanced stage of development.Mesothelioma can lay dormant for up to 50 years without showing any signs or symptoms. By the time symptoms do arise, the most effective mesothelioma treatments are often times no longer an option.
Despite this hurdle, mesothelioma doctors continue to find new ways of facilitating an early diagnosis. The Mesomark blood test is one such diagnosis aid that is expected to improve the length of survival for more mesothelioma patients in the future.
Surviving Longer
The earlier a patient is diagnosed with mesothelioma, the better the chances for an extended survival. Because of this, individuals who know that they were exposed to asbestos at some point in their life are often advised by doctors to undergo routine testing. Such testing can sometimes diagnose the disease before symptoms arise, often giving patients more treatment options.
Regardless of diagnosis timing, a number of mesothelioma patients have survived beyond the traditional expected survival time of one year. Though no clear plan for mesothelioma treatment seems to be the cause, some research indicates that these patients took actions to raise their immune systems.
For some, this meant undergoing chemotherapy or clinical immunology trials. Other patients claim that alternative therapies such as a vegetarian diet and meditation contributed to their prolonged survivorship.
Survivor Stories
The most well-known mesothelioma survivor is probably Paul Kraus. Kraus was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 1997, and continues to live a healthy, pain-free life. Kraus attributes his survival to a number of alternative therapies, including an altered diet, daily supplements, and ozone therapy. Ozone therapy involves introducing ozone molecules into the blood.
Rhio O'Connor is another man who believed in the power of alternative medicine. He too employed tactics such as daily supplements, altered diet, and meditation to survive well beyond his initial expected survival date.
