Mesothelioma Disease, Mesothelioma Types

Pleural mesothelioma symptoms can mimic other respiratory conditions. A diagnose is made by ruling out other symptoms. A diagnose will also be made on what stage the cancer is in, to determine the best pleural mesothelioma treatment options for a patient. Other things will be considered, like a patient's current health condition and figuring out where the cancer has spread.

The most common malignant pleural treatment options are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Sometimes all three are combined for treatment. Surgery is usually the least likely, since most patients when diagnosed are well advanced and the  mesothelioma cancer has already spread to other organs. Surgery is too risky at that point. If caught in the early stages, surgery is likely an option. A surgical removal of the tissue and lung is the typical procedure.

The most popular surgery treatments are chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Each treatment works to kill the cancer cells in the body. The problem is that it usually kills healthy cells as well, and the side effects can be just as bad as the cancer itself. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy has pro-long the life expectancy of over 5 years in some  mesothelioma patients. So hope isn't always lost when being diagnosed with mesothelioma.
