Malignant Mesothelioma Treatment, pleural mesothelioma

Apart from these complications the patient might die on the operation table itself which has a chance of about 2%. If the operation goes successful the patients can have a good chance of increased life span of about 2 years as compared to 6 to 9 months. But only the surgery cannot show the maximum result, for that the Pleurectomy Decortication should be combined with the preoperative and postoperative mesothelioma patients treatment.
The other treatments which can show better result with the surgery are the chemotherapy and radiotherapy which also helps in reducing the pain for the patients. After the surgery the patients are kept for 7 to 10 days for detailed observation to avoid any mesothelioma patients complications.

The doctors make decision between Pleurectomy Decortication and Extrapleural Pneumonectomy depending on the extent to which the tumor has spread into the chest. The Pleurectomy Decortication is chosen when the visceral pleurae and parietal pleurae remains separated at a distance. If the two pleurae are seen dissolved than the removal of the cavity from the lungs becomes complicated, Extrapleural Pneumonectomy is required.
The Pleurectomy Decortication surgery is used commonly for mesothelioma patients who are at there earlier stages. In a Pleurectomy Decortication the pleura from both sides of the chest are removed and in certain cases even the parts of pericardium and diaphragm is removed. To reach the parietal pleura the chest is opened with an incision and sometimes even the sixth rib is removed to reach the pleural cavity. After that the decortication of the lungs is performed followed by removal of the pleural cavity. It is possible that the diaphragm and pericardium is removed during the surgery, so the surgeon needs to build the equivalent structure using fibre mesh to mesothelioma patients perform the functions of the original structure. The adjacent lymph nodes are also removed for the analysis after the operation
