Pleurodesis procedure is a considerable surgical method for mesothelioma cancer. When there is a mesothelioma cancer in a patient’s body there is an accumulation of fluid in the space between the lungs and the mesothelial membrane. This fluid doesn’t allow smooth activity of the lungs in the body and the patient has problem in breathing initially. The Pleurodesis is used to cure the pleural mesothelioma cases.
Using Pleurodesis procedure the makes the mesothelial membrane to join together with the lungs and other organs so that no extra fluids is introduced because of the cancerous tissues. This procedure is not a curative measure but used to decrease the pain of the patient and allows him to fight with the disease with some relief. It is required to be ensured that the pleural fluid is removed from the chest as Pleurodesis procedure is going to conducted. The procedure of removing the pleural fluid using the tubes inserted through the skin is known as thoracotomy. The procedure involves a period of two to five days to take out the entire pleural fluid from the chest. During this procedure the patient is either kept at the hospital or he can also go back home while the procedure will continue following instructions from the doctor. The patient is not required to be put on anaesthesia.
Once the fluid is removed from the pleural space the Pleurodesis procedure continues by introducing a chemical fluid known as sclerosants into the pleural space. This chemical fluid is introduced into the pleural space using a tube. The sclerosants makes the pleurae to keep close with the membrane and lungs leaving no space for any other external fluid. There are many type of sclerosants available in the market and has their own success rates. The sclerosants is made to distribute evenly across the pleural space. Once all is done than later this chemical fluid is sucked using the same tube which was introduced for insertion of the fluid.
