Decortication is considered as the most common and the oldest surgical method of treating the fibrous tissue around an organ by removing it. The decortication method has been used for treatment related to lungs, and mesothelioma is one of the disease for which lung decortication is used. Decortication is not be considered as a curative procedure as it is a palliative measure for lung related conditions and diseases.
The lung decortication is a surgical procedure for mesothelioma patients where the visceral pleura are removed from the surface of the lung. This procedure is only performed on those who have a mild situation where the lungs causes pain due to difficulty in expanding and breathing problems, which is resultant of tissue membrane has fall down.
In pleural mesothelioma the visceral pleura is infected around the lungs. Due to the increase in the pleura the lungs are surrounded by the fibrous tumour tissue, which results in the reduced performance of the lungs as the lung is not able to expand properly. When the lung decortication is performed on patients with pleural mesothelioma, the condition and performance of the lung is noticed improved. When the decortication is performed on the lungs the damage to the lungs is a possibility, so the mesothelioma surgeons need to be extra cautions while removing the visceral pleura tissue around the lungs. Once the tissue is removed all the other fluids and pus should also be removed. The surgeons can choose between two decortication techniques, thoracotomy and VATS for the surgical procedure. Though most of the surgeons prefer VATS procedure but thoracotomy procedure allows the surgeons for the detailed inspection and removal of all the tissues and fluids from the infected area.
The lung decortication can be done using VATS or Thoracotomy surgical procedure. Both of these procedures have there own pros and cons. As in today modern era most of the surgeons prefer to go for VATS as the procedure is easier to performed than Thoracotomy. The patients also undergo less incision on his body and less complications after the surgery. In Thoracotomy procedure the detailed analysis of the case and surgery is possible. The patients who already have other health issue and Thoracotomy procedure cannot be performed on them can select VATS procedure.
